Torn into several pieces
The print had broken along old folds and lost its top corner altogether. The fragments were realigned and the missing background rebuilt out to the edge.
A tear across the face
A deep crease ran from the shoulder up through the cheek. Skin texture was rebuilt across the break so the repair does not read as a smoothed-over patch.
What Causes Tears, Cracks and Creases?
Photographic prints are paper, and paper fails in predictable ways. Knowing which kind of damage you have tells me how the repair will go.
Clean tears
A print torn in two, usually along a straight line. These are the most straightforward to repair because both edges still hold their detail — I realign them and rebuild the seam. Even a photo in several pieces can come back cleanly, so please do not throw away any fragment.
Cracked emulsion
The image layer cracks and lifts away from the paper backing, leaving a web of fine white lines. A cracked image needs each line traced and filled individually. It is slow work, but the result is usually indistinguishable from an undamaged print.
Creases and fold lines
A photograph kept folded in a wallet or an album develops a permanent crease where the fibres have broken. The crease flattens out digitally, and the lost detail underneath is reconstructed from the surrounding area.
Missing corners and areas
Where a piece is gone entirely, I rebuild it from context — the pattern of a dress, the line of a wall, the shape of a shoulder. If a face is missing, I will tell you honestly what can and cannot be recovered before you commit to anything.
How I Repair a Damaged Photograph
Every repair follows the same four stages, whether the photo has one small tear or has come to me in four pieces.
Assess and quote
You send a scan or a clear phone photo. I look at the extent of the tear, whether any area is missing entirely, and how much detail survives around the damage. You get a fixed price within three hours.
Realign and stabilise
If the photo is in pieces, I align the fragments digitally so the edges meet exactly. This has to be right before anything else happens, because every later step builds on it.
Rebuild the detail
The tear line is removed and the missing image rebuilt by hand, sampling from the surrounding photograph. This is the part that separates manual restoration from an automatic filter: I use what was actually there.
Finish and deliver
Contrast, sharpness and tone are balanced across the whole image so the repaired area does not stand out. You approve a proof, then receive the full-resolution file.

Yes, and it is one of the more reliable repairs. As long as you still have both halves, the edges can be realigned and the seam rebuilt. Photos in three or four pieces are also fine — please keep every fragment, even small ones, because each piece carries detail I can use.
Usually yes. Faces are the most demanding area to repair because the eye notices any error instantly, but a crack running across a face is repairable when the features either side of it survive. I will look at your scan first and tell you honestly what to expect.

No, and I would rather you did not — originals get lost in the post. A good scan at 600 dpi is all I need, and often a careful phone photo in daylight is enough to start. Nothing irreplaceable ever leaves your house.
